= Wiring Guide =
| MAX98357 Pin | Raspberry Pi | ESP32 | Description |
|---|
| VIN | 5V | 5V | Power supply (2.5-5.5V) |
| GND | GND | GND | Ground |
| BCK | GPIO 18 | GPIO 26 | Bit Clock (I2S) |
| LRCK | GPIO 19 | GPIO 27 | Left/Right Clock (I2S) |
| DIN | GPIO 21 | GPIO 25 | Data Input (I2S) |
| GAIN | 3.3V | 3.3V | Gain selection (optional) |
| SD | 3.3V | 3.3V | Shutdown (active high) |
For Raspberry Pi, connect VIN to 5V, GND to GND, and I2S pins to GPIO 18, 19, 21
GAIN pin: Connect to VIN for 9dB, GND for 6dB, or leave floating for 3dB (default)
SD pin must be HIGH for normal operation
= Gain Settings =
| GAIN Pin | Gain (dB) | Output Voltage | Output Power (5V, 8Ω) |
|---|
| Floating | 3dB | 1.4Vrms | 0.25W |
| GND | 6dB | 2.0Vrms | 0.5W |
| VIN | 9dB | 2.8Vrms | 1.0W |
Leave GAIN pin unconnected for default 3dB gain
Connect GAIN to VIN for maximum volume
Higher gain may cause clipping at higher volumes
= How It Works =
The MAX98357 combines a DAC and a Class D amplifier in a single chip:
- I2S audio data enters through DIN, synchronized by BCK and LRCK
- The built-in DAC converts the digital audio to analog
- The Class D amplifier converts the analog signal to high-efficiency PWM
- The filterless design directly drives the speaker without bulky LC filters
The module automatically detects sample rates and bit depths
The output is mono - for stereo you need two modules
The amplifier will enter shutdown if SD is pulled low
= Why Choose MAX98357? =
Singlechip I2Sto-speaker solution saves space and complexity
High audio quality with 0.06% THD+N
Filterless design reduces component count
Easy integration with Raspberry Pi and ESP32
Low power consumption for portable projects
Simple I2S interface with only 3 signal lines
√ No external DAC or amplifier needed
√ Works with 3.3V and 5V logic
√ Wide sample rate range (8kHz-96kHz)
√ Automatic mode detection
√ Supports mono audio applications
√ Gain-selectable for volume control
= Raspberry Pi Setup =
- Enable I2S audio in /boot/config.txt
- Install ALSA drivers
- Configure audio output to MAX98357
- Test with speaker-test command
- Play audio with aplay or audio players
The MAX98357 is natively supported in Raspberry Pi OS
I2S pins are shared with other GPIO functions - check pin conflicts
Use proper voltage levels (3.3V for Raspberry Pi, 5V for power)
= Safety Precautions =
Do not exceed 5.5V supply voltage
Ensure correct wiring of I2S signals
Use appropriate speaker impedance (4Ω-8Ω recommended)
Protect from ESD when handling
Keep away from moisture and heat sources
For maximum output power, use a stable 5V supply
For 3.3V logic systems, use level shifters if needed
